What if I want to change my Medicare Supplement insurance plan?

You might need to switch health care providers to pay fewer premiums or receive different coverages. Depending on where you are in your six-month Medigap open enrollment period, you can't change your enrollment policy, you can also address medical queries or you may pay higher premiums. If an insurance agency wants to sell you one of these policies, do not re-sell it before you are confident that you will be keeping that insurance.

The first 30 days are the time when you have the option to keep the current policy. During that time, your insurance policy will be paid in full. Depending on their state, Medicare beneficiaries who miss these windows of opportunity may unwittingly forgo the chance to purchase a Medigap policy later in life if their needs or priorities change, or if they choose to switch to traditional Medicare after several years of being in a Medicare Advantage plan. If you are interested in changing your Medicare plan, you should first contact your current plan to find out what options are available to you.

Can my Medicare Supplement plan be cancelled?

"That 12-month trial period lets you revert back to the Medigap plan you were previously enrolled in if you end up not liking Medicare Advantage," said Elizabeth Gavino, founder of Lewin & Gavino in New York and an independent broker and general agent for Medicare plans. Medicare Supplement plans are sold by private companies to cover the costs of Medicare Part B and Part D, deductibles, co-payments and coinsurance. Medicare Supplements (Medigap) is currently available.

This translates into that your insurance company cannot drop your insurance if your health problems have arisen. If you have questions about switching your Medicare Supplement policy, contact a licensed insurance agent to help you answer any questions you have about Medicare Supplement policies, coverage, or switching policies. If you would like to change your Medicare Supplement Plan, you must first contact your current plan to see if they will allow you to switch.

Insurance company

The insurance company becomes bankrupt or insolvent If you bought your Medigap policy before 1992, it might not be guaranteed renewable. This means the Medigap insurance company can refuse to renew the Medigap policy. But, the it must get the state's approval to cancel your Medigap policy. If this happens, you have the right to buy another Medigap policy. For more information Find a Medigap policy. Call your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP).

You won't be subjected to medical underwriting when you apply for a Medicare Supplement insurance policy during other guaranteed-issue rights situations, like if you move out of a plan's service area or if your insurance company goes bankrupt. A Medigap policy is health insurance sold by private insurance companies to fill the “gaps” in an original Medicare Plan coverage. Medigap policies help pay some of the health care costs that the original Medicare Plan does not cover.

Will moving affect my Medicare Supplement plan?

Moving to another country won't invalidate your Medigap plan. You can maintain the current Medicare Part A – Part B coverage despite where you live. Also, dropping an Advantage Plan means that if you want prescription drug coverage, you'll have to get a standalone Part D plan. Incidentally, Medigap does not pay any costs associated with that part of Medicare. You should always consult with your medical provider regarding diagnosis or treatment for a health condition, including decisions about the correct medication for your condition, as well as prior to undertaking any specific exercise or dietary routine.
