Medicare: Costs and free services

Medicare aims at a broad variety of medical conditions and is available to all Americans. The programs help seniors pay health care expenses, but they do so in a cost-effective manner. Medicare carries different costs that can range from coinsurance to a monthly premium.

The deductible is the amount billed to the insurer in order for the insurance company to pay the cost. Coinsurance refers to the amount paid by the individual for completing treatment or consulting. Copayment amounts are fixed payments made by a patient for drug services instead of a percent.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) manages Medicare. After you are enrolled, they will send you a Welcome to Medicare packet in the mail with your Medicare card. If your modified adjusted gross income as reported on your IRS tax return from 2 years ago is above a certain amount, you'll pay the standard premium amount and an Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA).
