Medicare Open Enrollment 2022 Guide

During the annual Open Enrollment period, Medicare beneficiaries can evaluate their health coverage and adjust the plan as they desire. Medicare Open Enrollment in 2022 was completed December 8, 2019. Find the easiest and quickest way to switch Medicare plans beyond the fall admission period. Medicare Advantage opened enrollment from January 1. The window described in greater detail here gives Medicare Advantage beneficiaries the option of choosing another Medicare Advantage or switching from Original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Plan enrollment

If you are eligible for Medicare Original Medicare you can also get access to Medicare Advantage plans. You must join original Medicare before you can get Medicare Advantage. When choosing the best plan, you should compare Medicare Advantage quotes for your situation. To gain Medicare Part C eligibility, you must already be in Part A and Part B.

If you are considering enrolling in Medicare, this may only happen in certain seasons each year. You can start enrolling at the beginning of the Medicare Initial Enrollment Period outlined here. Medicare Advantage Plan (previously known as Part C) includes all benefits and services covered under Part A and Part B — prescription drugs and additional benefits such as vision, hearing, and dental — bundled together in one plan. Medicare Part D (Medicare prescription drug coverage) helps cover the cost of prescription drugs.

Initial enrollment period

Some are eligible when they turn 65. People under 65 are eligible if they have received Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or certain Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) disability benefits for at least 24 months. Getting Medicare is an affordable option. In this period you can join within a seven-month window. Medicare annual enrollment period (AEP)

If you choose no Medicare or Medicaid supplemental health insurance during the first year of eligibility, you are eligible for Medicare a free health plan during the fall Medicare year-round enrollment period. The Medicare annual elections and open enrollment periods are also called Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescriptions.

The period usually lasts between October 15 and December 7. The changes made during 2019 fall annual enrollment will be implemented in January 2023. You will also receive the Medicare & You handbook, with important information about your Medicare coverage choices. Other Medicare Enrollment Options If you live in Puerto Rico you will not receive Medicare Part B (medical insurance) automatically.

Medicare general enrollment period

The next time you can apply for Medicare, will be during your Medicare general enrollment period. The general admissions season runs between January and March each year. Your coverage starts on July 1st only. Depending on how much time is left to complete Part B and the Part B enrollment process you must pay the late registration fee.

Late enrollment penalties: Upon enrolling in Medicare Part B at the first enrollment phase, you may face late enrollment penalty payments.

Enrollment periods for Medicare Part A and Part B

First enrollment period for Medicare Part B and Part C. As part of Medicare enrollment, a person must sign into a Medicare Part B and Part C program. Most individuals qualify to receive Medicare based upon age. Your first chance at gaining Medicare is your first enrollment period of seven months which lasts seven years. It starts 3 months before your 67th birthday including your birthday and ends 3 months later. You will get Medicare benefits when you reach age 65.

Extra time to sign up for Medicare is available for anyone who wasn't able to contact the Social Security Administration because of problems with Social Security's telephone system between January 1, 2022 - December 30, 2022.

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) Enrollment

If you qualify for Medicare Supplement Insurance through MediGap, the best time for enrollment will be the opening enrollment period for six months of Medigap enrollment. If you didn't register with Medigap during the Medigap Open Enrollment period, you could still get one. However insurance companies will be able to determine your health when they determine your premium. To purchase the Medicare plan, you need to have the Medicare Parts A and Parts B.

Medigap Plan C and Plan F changed in 2020

There have been minor and significant changes to Medigap's choice which can also be found within the standardized Medigap Plans. New Medicare beneficiaries with an eligible deductible under plan F can no longer receive Plan B. If you already received Medicare before January 31, 2020, you can still buy Plan F or Plan C until 2020 or beyond if you live within the United States. Any Medicare-eligible person who became enrolled in either plan after January 1, 2020 will not qualify. Any plan enrolling under plan C and plan f can continue their plans indefinitely.

Medicare Advantage Open enrollment period

The period lasts from December 31 to February 31 of each year. It gives a person eligible for Medicare a unique option – either with or without prescription drugs or original Medicare. You may also enroll in Medicare prescription drugs. In either instance, your coverage begins immediately after you change it. TIP: If you return from the original Medicare program there is also Medicare Supplement coverage available.

Medicare Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

Based on the circumstances, you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). Medicare special enrollment periods may occur anywhere within one calendar month. Some people qualify to have a special enrollment period for various reasons.

A time outside the yearly Open Enrollment Period when you can sign up for health insurance. You qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you’ve had certain life events, including losing health coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby, or adopting a child, or if your household income is below a certain amount.

Depending on your Special Enrollment Period type, you may have 60 days before or 60 days following the event to enroll in a plan. You can enroll in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) any time. During this time, you can enroll in original Medicare parts A and B, a Medicare advantage plan, part C, and a standalone Medicare prescription drug plan, part D.

Medicare Open enrollment period dates
