Medicare offers coverage to 65 and older people in the United States. Some older than 60 people can also qualify for Medicare, including those with disabilities or those who are permanently unable to function properly in the kidneys. The programs help pay for health care, but they don't cover medical expenses. The choice for your insurance policy is yours. You are entitled to a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan from a private insurer.

How do I enroll in Medicare?

You have many choices when enrolling in Medicare. Some Medicare enrollees automatically, but others may have to decide when and how they qualify.

Can I enroll in Medicare prescription drug coverage?

Medicare prescription drugs coverage is optional, but it's not automatic. You may receive prescription drugs coverage either with an individual Medicare prescription drug plan or with an Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drugs, commonly known as Medicare Advantage - Prescription Drugs. Private insurers offer Medicare prescription drugs plans as a benefit. Please note it is impossible to have both separate Medicare prescription drugs and Medicare Advantage programs which offer medically subsidized prescription drugs.

Medicare enrollment period

Tell me the Medicare Part B late-enrollment penalty?

You may be subject to penalties if you don't join Medicare Part B before you reach eligibility. Your monthly Part B premium will be 10% higher if you have not taken Part B for a full 12 months. The premiums will continue to be charged if you enroll in Medicare. If you are not automatically enrolled in Medicare, it may take some time to register. If you do not enroll in Medicare in your initial year of eligibility, you can face late payments.

When should I enroll in Medicare if I receive disability benefits?

Those who have not received a Social Security disability benefit for less than 60 months are automatically eligible for Medicare Part A and Part B benefits. Exceptions exist in patients suffering end-stage renal disorders. If you were diagnosed with ESRD and need renal dialysis regularly, you can qualify for Medicare reimbursement. You are eligible for Medicare the same month you start receiving disability payments.

When should I enroll in Medicare if I am receiving retirement benefits?

Unless you retire before you reach the age of 65, you may automatically receive medical coverage from a federal agency for Medicare Part A. You can enroll in hospital coverage or medical coverage under Medicare Part B when you enroll in Medicare Part A. If you live outside of the USA and Puerto Rico you are automatically eligible for Medicare Part A, but must manually enroll into Medicare Part B.

Can I enroll in Medicare if I don't qualify for retirement benefits?

If you aren't qualified for Social Security and RRB retirement benefits, you can't automatically join Original Medicare. You could nevertheless get Medicare Part A - Part B during an IEP. Some Medicare Part A plans do not offer a monthly Part A payment based on the length you have worked with Medicare. It is still a Part B payment obligation.

Medicare general enrollment period

Unless you are not enrolled at the start of the IEP, you can apply at the start of the general enrollment period. Original Medicare has enrollment periods that run from January 1 to March 31 each year. You may need a late enrollment penalty if you didn’t sign up when you first became eligible.
